Share your post with your fan club! Being from the Midwest, I find myself with the occasional craving for a White Castle. Are there any good imitators? I've driven by that Chicago place on Indian School 1, times but never been in. Would love to know your thoughts, especially if you can compare it to the real White Castle burger.

Unlike the steam-cooked Original Slider, the is a throwback to White Castle's early days, when burgers were cooked the typical way — as in, directly on a grill. To make one, a raw meat patty is topped with diced onions, sprinkled with seasoned salt and grilled. A Slider with all the fixings comes topped with cheese, lettuce and tomato.
While it's worth trying one of these, if only to get a taste of White Castle's past, the truth is that steam cooked patties are where White Castle shines. In comparison, the Slider tasted dry and a little bland. Bottom line: If you're looking for a non-steam cooked burger or slider, there are about a million places to go that aren't a chain known for something totally different. Vegetarian and vegan diners are undoubtedly familiar with plant-based Impossible burgers, which are available everywhere from Burger King to Red Robin in metro Phoenix.
At White Castle, the Impossible Slider comes topped with lettuce, tomato, pickle and smoked cheddar cheese, giving it more in common with the Slider than White Castle's O. While it's great for vegetarian and vegan more on that later diners to have options at White Castle, these burgers don't quite rise to the level of being required eating for omnivores. The patty doesn't really taste like beef, which makes sense because it isn't. On the other hand, it did get an unqualified stamp of approval from one vegetarian diner during our taste test.
And White Castle gets bonus points for cooking its Impossible patties on separate grills from meat products so vegan diners can experience the crave if they order theirs without cheese. The company spokesperson confirmed to the Republic that White Castle buns are vegan.
You heard it here first: Metro Phoenix's fast-food game just leveled up. The breakfast menu at Arizona's White Castle is not only available whenever the restaurant is open, it's also some of the best stuff on the menu. Sliders can be ordered on either regular buns or tiny Belgian waffles and with a choice of bacon or sausage and American, smoked cheddar or jalapeno cheese. The company brags hard on the fact that it imports its mini waffles from Belgium and that might not matter — except for the fact that they're really good.
They're toasted to a golden crisp and the touch of vanilla is a perfect counterpoint to the salty notes of your favorite breakfast meat. Round it out with a beautiful slice of melted American cheese and a fresh-cracked egg and you truly can't complain.
